Balmoral Road
In the heart of bustling Downtown Victoria, amidst the urban hustle and bustle, lies a sanctuary where the dream of growing food becomes a vibrant reality. For our client, cultivating an abundance of annual vegetables and fruits was not just a desire—it was a must.
Our biggest opponent in the path of this design was a formidable foe: a mature western red cedar hedge, casting shadows and asserting its dominance with aggressive root pressure. Because it provides our clients with much desired privacy from the busy street beyond, the hedge must stay. Solution number one: annual vegetables grown in galvanized horse troughs. With solid bottoms preventing any competition from the encroaching roots, these raised beds become the ideal environment for cultivating a bounty of annual vegetables. Not only do they provide ergonomic ease for tending to the garden, but they look great too! Solution number two: river rock edging for the perennials gardens so we can raise the grade of the soil 1-2 ft. This buffer depth provides the new plants and opportunity to establish a root system before the cedar roots can invade!
In the shadier corners of the garden, where the cedar's shadow looms large, we utilized plants beloved by pollinators—both birds, bees and beyond.
